Azade Shahmiri



Azade Shahmiri (b.1982) is a theatre artist and performance maker. She studied theatre at University of Tehran and received her PhD in Art Studies with a thesis on Representations of the West in Iranian Drama: A Cultural Semiotic Approach. Her artistic practices and processes move between forms of theatre, performance, lecture, and video installation – closely interwoven with personal narratives and readings from the past that explore the constructions of reality through documentation.

Azade Shahmiri’s plays and performances have been shown in theatres and festivals in Asia and Europe, among others in Tehran, Kyoto, Gwangju, Kerala, Vienna, Zurich, Basel, Brussels, Berlin and Geneva. Azade Shahmiri has received fellowships at various art institutions, including PACT Zollverein Essen, Saari Residence Finland, and Literarisches Colloquium Berlin.
